Dr. Luisa Hernandez Medellin

Dr. Hernandez Medellin was born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico, where she initiated her undergraduate studies in general psychology at the Jesuit Iberoamerican University in 2003.  Her clinical training at that time included providing psychological services to at-risk children, adolescents and the elderly at various locations in urban-marginal neighborhoods, under the supervision of clinical psychologists. She also coordinated volunteer services at the local Federico Gomez General Children’s Hospital, and was involved in several community outreach and volunteering services throughout the years with the Jesuit Youth Volunteer Service, SOS Villages, and the Society of St Teresa of Jesus Mission in Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Costa Rica. 

Dr. Hernandez Medellin relocated to Miami, Florida in 2004 and graduated from Carlos Albizu Univeristy with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2009. She earned a Master of Science in General Psychology in 2010 while completing a doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Carlos Albizu University in 2016. During graduate school, she had predoctoral clinical practicum training at various distinguished training sites such as the Goodman Psychological Services Center, the Neurobehavioral Institute of Miami,   The Village South/Adolescent Treatment Program, and the Outpatient Pediatric Neuropsychology program at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. Hernandez Medellin completed her predoctoral internship at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital in the Pediatric Neuropsychology Track. She then completed a two-year postdoctoral residency in Pediatric Behavioral Health and Pediatric Neuropsychology at the same institution, where she continued as the attending Pediatric Neuropsychologist and Pediatric Rehabilitation Psychologist, providing neuropsychological and behavioral health inpatient and outpatient services at Holtz Children’s Hospital, Ryder Trauma Center, and Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital. Her diverse training has prepared Dr. Hernandez Medellin to provide both targeted and comprehensive neuropsychological assessments/recommendations for a variety of pediatric neurological conditions, as well as treatments such as cognitive retraining, behavioral interventions, and parenting skills. Dr. Hernandez Medellin is also trained in play therapy and the assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorders using the ADOS-2.

Dr. Hernandez Medellin has been the author or co-author of 17 poster presentations, and along with her research team, participated at 11 national and international conferences including NAN, INS, and APA, presenting results and case studies derived from a major research project involving Neuropsychological Profiles of Neurodevelopmental Conditions In Pediatric Populations from 2014-2019. Other clinical and research interests include the neuropsychological assessment of pediatric bilingual populations (English/Spanish), ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, longstanding cognitive/behavioral effects of Premature birth, TBI and Auditory Processing Disorder, and the neurobiology of attachment. Dr. Hernandez Medellin was also Adjunct Faculty at Miami Dade College-West Campus from 2011-2016, where she taught undergraduate Psychology and Student Success/Life Skills courses.

Currently she is a member of the pediatric psychology consultation team at the Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Hospital.

Dr. Hernandez Medellin’s professional affiliations include the National Academy of Neuropsychology; the American Psychological Association (APA); APA Division 53: Clinical Child Psychology; APA Division 40: Society for Clinical Neuropsychology; APA Division 54: Society of Pediatric Psychology; and The International Honor Society In Psychology (Psi Chi). Dr. Hernandez Medellin is currently applying for Board Certification in Clinical Neuropsychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).  

Dr. Hernandez Medellin recently founded Advanced Neurobehavioral Health, Inc. to continue to provide neuropsychological and behavioral health services to children, adolescents and their families in our South Florida communities. She has longstanding experience working with multidisciplinary rehabilitation and medical teams, including physical, occupational, speech, recreational and ABA therapists, physiatrists, psychiatrists, neurologists and neurosurgeons, nursing, social workers, and case managers. She is also well-versed in liaising with the public school system and also at the College level, collaborating and making recommendations about accommodations and services to facilitate academic success. In addition to neuropsychological assessment, Dr. Hernandez Medellin utilizes evidence-based treatment modalities to assist with the emotional and behavioral comorbidities of neurodevelopmental disorders, acquired brain injury and other medical conditions affecting the nervous system, including CBT, ACT, behavioral interventions, cognitive rehabilitation, and parenting skills training.
